I’ll be honest, I wasn’t entirely sure what I was walking into. I’d read enough to know a hammam was worth doing in Morocco, but the actual experience? Nobody really prepares you for that part. Here’s everything I wish someone had told me about an authentic Moroccan hammam experience before I walked through those doors, and everything you need to know before your first traditional Moroccan hammam.
You change into a robe and slippers. Disposable underwear is provided, though fair warning it runs small. If you are anything above a medium or have larger hips, bring your own bikini bottoms or a spare pair of underwear, because the alternative is not comfortable and not a great start to a relaxing experience.
One more thing that caught us off guard: if you’re booking for two people, it’s most likely a shared experience. You will absolutely be flashing your travel companion unless you specifically request a private session. It’s worth asking about upfront if modesty is a concern. And for couples, male and female guests may be split into separate hammam rooms, so you’ll each have your own attendant and your own experience. These are the hammam in Morocco tips I genuinely wish I’d had before we booked.

The hammam room itself is a steam room, warm and enveloping in a way that immediately starts to loosen every muscle you didn’t know was tense. My attendant started by spraying me down with hot water, then worked in Morocco’s famous black soap (also called Moroccan black soap, or beldi soap), a dark, silky paste made from olives that smells earthy and clean. Front, back, every inch covered.
Then came the kessa glove, the traditional exfoliating mitt at the heart of kessa glove exfoliation. This is the part everyone’s curious about. It’s a rough exfoliating mitt, and the scrubbing is firm, but not harsh. What it removes is genuinely astonishing. Layers of dead skin that no shower ever touched. The rinse that follows is somehow both satisfying and slightly mortifying in the best way.

Once the scrub is done, you’re wrapped in ghassoul, a traditional ghassoul clay mask, applied from your face all the way to your toes. Then you simply lay in the steam and let it work. About 10 to 15 minutes of stillness. It’s a rare thing, that kind of enforced quiet in the middle of a trip. One final rinse, and you’re back in your robe, handed water, and given time to just sit.
The whole process runs about 30 minutes and I would absolutely do it again tomorrow.
From the hammam, we were taken to a massage room for the second half of the experience. This is likely an add-on to your basic hammam package. What followed was a full-body massage, head to toes, back to front, using argan oil, a hallmark of the argan oil massage Morocco is known for. Mine was scented with wintergreen. My niece’s was orange blossom. We weren’t asked to choose, but somehow the attendants simply picked the right one for each of us. His smelled incredible. Mine smelled like exactly what I needed due to the cold I’d developed along our trip.
Thirty minutes later, we were finished. Not just clean, but genuinely restored.

A traditional Moroccan hammam isn’t a spa day in the Western sense. It’s a ritual that locals have practiced for centuries, social, cleansing, cultural. As a visitor, you’re stepping into something that exists independent of tourism, and that makes it feel entirely different from anything you can replicate at home.
If Morocco is on your bucket list, a traditional hammam belongs on it too. It’s one of those Morocco bucket list experiences you simply can’t replicate anywhere else.
